The subject matter of these paintings is the land at the edge of the sea, and its marginal, functional structures.
On overcast days, standing out on the mud looking towards the land, these structures present a horizon of greys, subdued hues, and rare areas of saturated colour.
I work in the studio from sketches, with photographs for colour reference. I paint on board with a three colour palette of oils; sometimes using a glazing medium or turps to stretch the paint.
